What is Mindfulness?


The purpose of this course is to help individuals and couples learn and practice mindfulness.

PART 1: WHAT IS MINDFULNESS?

  1. Applications of mindfulness practice for couples will be reviewed.
  2. Examples of how to use mindfulness practice will be demonstrated
  3. The structure will be provided for couples to apply the practice to their relationship.

PART 2: PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR BODY, LISTEN TO YOUR STORIES

  1. Couples will increase awareness of stories from the past that cause emotional reactivity.
  2. The method of body scans will be demonstrated and explained.
  3. Couples will increase awareness of family stories that they pass to their children.

PART 3: COMMUNICATING WITH MINDFULNESS

  1. Mindfulness practice to help calm the mind and body will be demonstrated.
  2. Mindfulness practice application for reducing emotional reactivity will be shown.
  3. Couple skills to learn to let go of rumination on past and future will be demonstrated.

PART 4: KEEPING THE FIRES BURNING: MINDFUL SEX

  1. Ways that mindfulness practice can enhance sexual connection will be discussed.
  2. Mindfulness practices to get couples out of their head and into their senses will be demonstrated.
  3. Applications of mindfulness in sexual experiences will be discussed by the couple.

PART 5: USING MINDFULNESS WITH CHILDREN

  1. Literature will be reviewed regarding the efficacy of mindfulness to help children with focus, concentration, and self-soothing.
  2. The value of the family practice of mindfulness will be explored
  3. Mindfulness practices to use with children will be explored.

COURSE STRUCTURE

  • Each segment will have a video lesson teaching mindfulness concepts.
  • Several segments will have an additional video demonstrating mindfulness practices.
  • Several readings from Change your Story, Change Your Brain for Better Relationships by Dr. Linda Miles will be included. (In press with Xlibris)
  • Additional resources and readings will be included.

Do I have to take this course with my partner?
No! While the courses are built to be most effective by taking the course as a couple, it's not required. However, we believe that when even one person in a relationship commits to developing skills and strategies to strengthen the connection with their partner, it can pay huge relational dividends.
Should I use this course instead of going to traditional relationship therapy or marriage counseling?
This course is not a replacement for couples counseling or therapy. It is designed to be used as a complement alongside traditional therapy, or by couples who are seeking to proactively develop the skills and strategies to make their good relationships great.
